Fail

The onions are a complete failure this year. They apparently did not like their raised bed. They grew nice green onions but never made larger bulbs. I went and collected them because we were out of onions today so they are still getting used anyway. They are not the only failure. The carrots seed that I planted (two different packages) hardly came up. There might be 5 little carrots out there and they are growing incredibly slow.

  1. Hi Becky! I know what you mean about fail! Sometimes it seems there is as much failure as success in the garden! I planted several rows of corn and beans that have yet to come up! It's been about two weeks and I've been watering because of the drought. We had two good rains lately, so maybe that will help! I know I got a late start, but I really wanted to grow them this year. Plus, I had to wait til hubby could use the tiller to til the spot, cause it's too big for me to handle. Blessings from Bama!

  2. I had trouble growing onions at my last house. This soil though seems to be good for them. This year it is my corn that seems to be having trouble germinating. I keep willing them all to come up but they are spotty and I keep resowing.

  3. Seeds I had two different vegetable seeds that didn't germinate as did a friend of mine, seeds were all from same company. One, I had enough to plant a second time and nope none came up again. It was squash for petes sake. One of the easiest things to germinate on the planet LOL. I have to think it was the seeds.

  4. That is how my onions looked. I left a few out there just to see what would happen and all of those bulbs were huge. So for me, I just pulled them too early. They had fallen over, but were still green and hadn't peaked through the soil. So maybe you pulled too early like I did?

  5. You can't win 'em all. Sometimes things just don't do well. Do the same again and you may get complete success.
I had a complete failure with my Kohlrabi last year, but I'm growing it again this year, and hoping to do better.

  6. I also planted 2 varieties of carrots. And there is just a handful that actually popped up and then some kind of animal decided to dig around in the carrot bed. I'm contemplating just ripping them up and maybe planting some more squash or some bush beans.

  8. Well, It's good thing to be able to eat our mistakes! SO what is going in the space now that the onions are gone?

  9. Probably nothing because the squash has either over run them or is going to.

  10. so far my raised bed gardens are doing okay...but i have had one failure to speak of...my beets germinated and grew to about three inches..then they quit-and then just disappeared from sight. well, it is too warm now to replant beets so i ran down to the hardware store and bought three sweet pepper plants and three eggplants-so far, they are doing well. in past years i have had onions fail, corn failure, and yes i have had total garden failure too. i have two spots with carrots..one is doing real good and the other is doing just okay. two weeks ago i thought i was gonna lose the brussel sprouts but today they looked so good i raised my expectations. today the mailman delivered my new dehydrator...i am fixing to learn something new this summer!

    1. Good for you! I have a couple of dehydrators and they are so easy to learn how to use but for a while after I got mine they just sat there. I had this book that told me how many hours everything needed to dry which with a dehydrator is ridiculous. You just dry everything until it is "really" dry.

  11. Your onions do look petite. May be you should try it again and will give a more successful result?

  12. Were the onions still growing. It seems early to be harvesting onions but maybe it isn't early for where you are. Ours will be in the ground for a few more months yet. Although we will be harvesting the onions set in autumn sooner

    1. No they weren't growing anymore. One of them had a bit of a green top but the rest had all died off and have been died off.

  13. My MIL and FIL raised about everything they ate. They told me to push off the dirt around the top of the onions to make larger onions. When they start to make bulbs remove some soil from the top of the onions. As they get bigger remove the soil so only the bottom half are in the soil. It really works. I get much larger onions doing it this way. Some of my onions this year weighed up to 3/4 of a pound.

  14. I finally got some onions this year. Not huge but at least bigger than green onions. I have never had good luck with them before. I planted in a raised bed this year and fertilized a good bit. And made sure they were watered good. I think it is a good idea to push the dirt away from the tops. My neighbor told me that too so I tried to do that. I have one out there that is huge and the rest are various sizes but they are about done too.
