HEAT!

It is supposed to be 97 degrees F. today. We often hover in the upper 90's for weeks during the summer but we seldom have weeks where we get in the 100's. This is going to be one of those weeks. Tomorrow is supposed to get 105 degrees F. Then Saturday they are calling for 106 F. Sunday we still don't get a break at102 F. And then we drop back into the 90's for the week which will probably feel cool by then. By the way, the chance for rain is extremely slim and the humidity is going to be ridiculous too. I will be struggling to keep the garden alive and watered and also to keep the house anywhere near cool.
Next week I have completely off though we don't get paid for it and I am so looking forward to it, even if it is hot enough to cook on the porch without a stove.
Here's hoping  you all will be having better weather for next week than we are going to get!

  1. We are supposed to warm up too. But, not as hot as you! We do have a chance of some rain tonight or tomorrow. I sure hope we get some.

    Stay Cool

  2. I think I would die if I lived in a place that was often in the 90s over the summer. I'm a real heat wimp. Our normal is in the low 80s for the summer. But we will be getting another heat wave starting on Friday (which here means three days of 90s in a row). I'm not looking forward to it. The garden on the other hand will just love it.

    1. And a lot of our 90's days are upper 90's like 97, 98 degrees.

  3. Hmm, this puts our wishes for "warmer" weather well and truly into perspective! I hope your aircon units are in good working order.

    1. My air conditioner units are cheap, lol, but they work. They won't be able to keep up with 100 degrees outside though. We will be lucky if we can keep it in the 80's inside.

  4. We are looking at 102 today without heat index and humidity which is always horrid. I am an Arizona girl and can tolerate heat but not humidity. That's a whole other monster. Good luck staying cool! I will be icing down rabbits and trying to stay inside a lot!! :)

  5. Hi Becky! I know what you mean! Our temps here are going to be just a bit higher than that! I feel sorry for people with health issues and the elderly! My husband and son are HVAC techs,(son is in training) and they are out all day in this heat! I don't know how they do it! Praying for rain! Blessings from Bama!

    1. We do that all through the summer. The mornings are the only decently cool times.

  9. In Australia we usually have a hot week or two in late January to early February. Last year one of the hottest days was 44C or 112F. Basically though once the temperature gets over body temperature it is too hot for comfort.

    1. Well, we had a rather nice spring this year so we can't complain too much though we have gotten quite dry and the lake is down a lot.

  11. Did I mention that neither the car or the truck have a working air conditioner? Yeah, we will be going shopping EARLY Saturday and only getting the essentials so we can be quick before that heat sets in.
It is currently 99 degrees F. The weather predictors never can get it right.

  12. Hang in there. I just posted the other day about our 108 degree day. The humidity made the "feels like" somewhere around 115. Ugh.

    Stay as cool as possible!

  13. 103 degrees at 4pm today..8:41 and it is 99 degrees...been watering gardens twice a day this week. we are experimenting this year with our heat and air conditioning..did not turn a/c on until it reached 90 degrees in the house..then, we set thermostate at 82 degrees..now some folks will call this too warm, but with the summer heat and humidity as it is, 82 feels mighty comfortable and we have been acclimating ourselves at the same time to endure warmer temperatures...seems to be working well. we decidedd to do this after recalling our summers as children living on farms and in the city without anything but open windows and box fans-and also, we were looking for ways to save money on electric rates which have been climbing almost as fast as the temperatures.

    1. I think it is a very good idea. Our electric bill is going to be terrible this month.

    2. We have the air conditioners (2 window units) on 70 and are only cooling three rooms. Yesterday they quite well and kept the house at about 78-80 degrees.

  14. What is it with this summer. This time last year I was complaining it was too cold and my garden wasn't growing. This year my garden is burning up!! We have had 2 days over 100 and that is almost unheard of in our area in June.

  15. It's warm in Michigan, too. We broke a record today (98 degrees). Not as hot as some, but still miserable.

Something that has helped during this hot, dry weather has been heavily mulching the gardens. It keeps the soil moist and cool. I've only watered the garden four times so far. I used straw, but you can use any number of things to mulch. Newspaper sections, shredded paper, wood chips, tree leaves...

    1. Well, the last time I mulched the garden the slugs ate just about everything in it and I mean everything that popped up, they took down.

    2. Slugs! They ate my squash plants before I realized they were there. Remember that beer batch that didn't turn out so well? Well, I found a good use for it. I've been using it for beer traps for the slugs (they love the stuff). Plus I used garden powder for the cabbage and then went ahead and sprinkled the peppers, too. They didn't bother them after that. The funny thing is, now that it hasn't been raining, the slugs have receded.

  16. Ugh...stay cool and keep hydrated. This heat wave sucks, no doubt! I work in a 150 year old building with no air conditioning...we use swamp coolers but it barely makes a dent...pretty brutal these days.

  17. I give you credit for being able to live in that enviroment. Here in Alaska, I go nuts when the temps. go over 65.

    1. John... I would love it if it only got to 65. Problem is, I really dislike the below zero temps and I'm sure you have plenty of that there.

    2. Went shopping , got home at 9:00 a.m. Went out to feed and water the garden. Just absolutely pouring sweat by 10:00. The air conditioners are doing good though. It only got up to about 85 inside yesterday.

  18. The sad part is that I get more views on this posts than the REALLY self sufficient posts which shows how many people are really doing anything self sufficient (see the next post or several before this). 92 inside the house today and Phil even got the third air conditioner running. Welcome to the South.
