Harvest and Future Harvests

I really am pleased with my garden this year. Oh, it isn't going to produce tons of food to feed us but I feel like we are at least on the right track now. I keep thinking about where I can put some more raised beds and how I can slowly take over the lawn without Phil noticing.
Anyway, the hanging basket tomatoes have been a complete success this year since I have been very careful to water every day now that it has gotten hot. We'll be picking these very soon.
Look at that cluster of little tomatoes!
There are some nice clusters of tomatoes in the garden as well. I am not exactly sure which variety this is. I guess I should have written that down but these are either Tip Top, Taxi or San Marzano.
I'll also have more squash to eat soon.
This is one from one of the later planted squash plants.
And here is the harvest. I couldn't wait any more and dug up some of the potatoes. They are quite small and maybe I should have left them longer but the tops of some of the potatoes were starting to die off in the heat. These weighted about 2 lbs.

  1. Pretty tomatoes. I only plant my mint in pots. I'm terrible about watering. If I had to water every day they might die. One year I did do potted tomatoes and I did succeed with them, but such a pain.

    1. I only did these three pots of tomatoes and I have my mint in pots too. The mints are lucky they are still alive as I have forgotten to water them several times already.

  3. Oh I wish my tomatoes were that far advanced! It will be many weeks before mine even set fruit I think.
I have LOADS of things in pots and containers, but watering is not such a problem for me since we don't ever get the really high temps that you get.
I have some San Marzano toms too; it is a "plum" type, if that helps you to identify yours...

    1. Yeah, I am thinking the ones in that picture must be the San Marzano because they look like they are going to be long and are a bit pointed on the ends. I think I had 4 of those so they are probably what is in that bed. I know the second bed has the celebrity so that means that the front bed must have the taxi and tip top. If that is right then the San Marzano has grown faster than any of the other tomatoes.

  4. Good harvest. The yellow tomatoes look like jewels. My tomatoes need another month atleast before they can mature and produce fruits

  5. Hi Becky,

So, so envious of your tomatoes...mine are still really little as the weather has been so unpredictable over here. Still, tomorrow is going to be spent totally in the garden sorting everything out so perhaps in a few months time...

  6. Looks like you're gong to have a good crop this year. To take the pain out of watering you may want to look at one of those battery operated watering timers. Just hook it up to the hose bib, set it for the cycles you need and forget it! I'm lucky I have a lawn sprinkler system so I just tapped into it for my garden and it gets watered when the lawn does.
I doesn't take many forgetful days watering the garden and the plants can't get over the stress.

    1. Really the hoses I have used don't seem to be all that sturdy. They are constantly getting some hole here or there or leaking at the connections so I always have to turn them off after using so as not to waste water. Plus I want to use the rain barrel as much as possible.
I couldn't have a lawn sprinkler system, lol, just couldn't waste water on the "lawn" and we have too many water banns throughout the summer. Better to save the water for the garden :)
Being self sufficient to me means not buying things I don't need. I can turn on the spigot and stand over my little garden and water it when it needs it. My garden isn't big enough for me to need anything else.
The pots are different. They have to be watered every day and they are hanging from the porch so I just take a jug of water out and do it.

  7. our squash and tomatoes are just getting started here, looking at yours though I get excited for that time of year to be here.
I am planting my garden for production this year, but it is new dirt and I am a bit nervous about whether it will or not. But so far so good.

I am fortunate here, because nobody cares how much of the yard I take over for gardens, chickens, goats or whatever else. In fact Our neighbor is out cutting me another hug swath now because I ran out of room. :D

Loved looking at your pictures Becky, cant wait till I can take some pics like that of my own.

    1. Oh he doesn't really care if I take the lawn but I don't like to force too much of this one him at once. He loves me and will help me live this way but sometimes I think it would not exactly be his choice if I wasn't here.
Besides, I am still thinking about fencing in that lawn so I can have a goat or two, lol.

  8. I'm a little confused. I thought the potato production underground was most productive after the tops had died off?

    1. I don't think so. I believe the potatoes are ready to harvest once the tops died off and mine were dying off so I went ahead.

  11. I like the look of your tomato plants. I can't wait for the warm weather here to stay so my tomato plants will start growing tomatos.

  12. Hi Becky!
Nice to meet a 'neighbor'! Your tomatoes are looking good! Mine are still green, but hopefully soon they'll be ready! You sound a lot like me; doing things others won't or can't! I love cooking from scratch, canning, gardening, and making things like ketchup! I've just been doing some of these things for a year, and like you, I'm learning and doing more things all of the time. Come over and visit sometime! Blessings from Bama!
