Several questions were asked about the spoon on the last post. It is just the second one that I have made. The other spoon post I have put on the sidebar under Popular Posts. I made them out of some wood that Phil brought home to me. I really don't know what kind it is. I have found that I really enjoy making them. The act of carving is soothing and calming to me. They aren't perfect in any way but they are perfectly usable.
Here is a picture of the two now that they are finished.
Amazing! I love the idea of making spoons...such a wonderful skill! When I spin I feel so relaxed. Most people that I've tried to teach to spin think it's stressful...not me! I love the smell of the wool, the softness of it in my hand...the rhythm of my foot rocking on the treadle...very relaxing.
ReplyDeleteYour so clever! I wanna try this
ReplyDeleteIf it was only your second one, you're doing good!
ReplyDeleteIt was only my second one but the picture doesn't show the imperfections. Still I like my spoons because they are thicker and sturdier than any spoons I have seen in the stores and I just happen to like wooden spoons anyway.
Deletei like your spoons and i can sure understand how it can give your pleasure to make them. i quilt and sew and every now and then i take a sketch pad and pencil outdoors and try to capture some of what mother nature gives us.
ReplyDeleteI like to do all those things too although lately I haven't done any of them. I do have a quilt started but not even sewn yet.
DeleteWow!! They certainly look perfect to me. You have really did a good job. I love to use wooden spoons, that what I use to mix up my bread.
ReplyDeleteNow that what I call an Amazing gift to take a piece of wood and carve it into something useful, and pretty too.
They look really good! What did you (if you did) oil them with?
ReplyDeleteThey are oiled with linseed oil which is what my book said to oil them with.

DeleteBecky your wooden spoons look very good. I needed a couple of new wooden spoons and was appalled how thin and flimsy the ones in the shops and supermarkets were. I eventually purchased 2 thick and sturdy ones from a local supermarket chain (Coles). I particularly like these because they have an inset piece along the handle where a wide circle of silicone has been stuck to provide extra grip. I did have to lightly sand both of them because they were a bit rough. I then washed and oiled them ready for work.
ReplyDeleteWow - those look fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAngela has it spot on - you are so clever. They look fabulous and I can completely understand the appeal of making them.
ReplyDeleteYou did good Becky........I'm partial to the not quite round not quite square one.Don't worry about the imperfections, that's what makes them special.
ReplyDeleteI like that one too though the rounder one turned out nice with the wood grain going around the bowl of the spoon too. I can't say that I planned the squarer one to be that way, it was just how my first one turned out but I do like it. I am sure I will have several different shaped ones eventually. I suppose I should care about looks more, most of the hand carved wooden spoons come out thin at the point of the bowl but I don't like these near as well as mine. I don't want mine to look "store bought". I can't see the point in that.
