I actually harvested this yesterday.
Another batch of spinach. This spinach came from the raised bed in the back yard. The peas are trying to over run that bed but the spinach and kale are still fighting for a few spots.
The leaves in the front are the lemon balm that I picked to make bread with.
And here are the little heads of red cabbage. I finally picked them mainly because I needed to get the rest of the tomatoes and peppers planted and these were in the way. The tomatoes that I had planted outside were doing wonderful but the ones in the greenhouse weren't near as big.
And, of course, there are some quail, chicken and duck eggs.

ReplyDeleteI love Quail eggs but find it difficult to crack the shells without breaking the yolk-any tips-you must have cracked a fair few in your time!!
I can't say that I use them a lot fresh. I usually boil them for pickled eggs or hatch them or just boil them and give them to the pigs.

ReplyDeleteThe quail are corturnix. They are ready to eat in 8-9 weeks.
DeleteThose cabbages are gorgeous. I keep trying to grow big red cabbage but always fail. This year I'm sticking to green and two new varieties for me.

ReplyDeleteWhat variety is your spinach? I didn't do well with mine last year. I notice that my lemon balm leaves are not nearly as big as yours, would that be the variety, or just that they look big in your photo? Your cabbage looks wonderful.
The spinach in the photo is an heirloom called Viroflay but I have another variety in the garden (can't remember it right off hand but the one from the cheap packets) that did just as well.
DeleteThe lemon balm is just plain lemon balm but is growing where it is damp but sunny and it is an absolutely huge patch now.

I picked more spinach (the Perpetual type) at the weekend too. I have to admire the Red Cabbage, they look pretty good, and it's a difficult crop to grow. Are you going to pickle it? It's interesting that you chose to cook some of your plentiful Lemon Balm. What was that cake really like?
ReplyDeleteI will not be pickling the cabbage as there really isn't enough of it. I don't know how we will use it yet.

ReplyDeleteI love the red cabbages - they look just perfect. I grew them successfully for the first time last year - I love how they look in the garden as well - really pretty. Unfortunately this years plants are looking terrible so I might have to replant.
