Spiced Vanilla Pears, Spinach and Yogurt

Just another busy Sunday, I guess. I had six pounds of pears to can and after reading through several websites I came up with my own recipe.

Canned Spiced Vanilla Pears

6 lbs pears

The pears need to be peeled, cored and then put in a bowl of cold water that has a little lemon juice in it to keep the pears from turning brown while you peel.

Then I made a light syrup (3 cups sugar and 9 cups water) and I added a broken up stick of cinnamon, some vanilla (I didn't measure a teaspoon or two), and a little sprinkling of ground cloves (I was going to just add a whole clove to each jar but I couldn't find the whole cloves). I put the pears in this and boiled it for a little bit (not long just enough to get them hot).
I put them in jars and water bathed canned them for 25 minutes.
I ended up with 7 1/2 pints.

I also had to blanch the spinach today and get it in the freezer.

While I was canning and then blanching I have also been making yogurt. I am just waiting for it to cool down to 100 degrees F. so that I can put it in jars and put it in the oven.

For supper I have a boiled ham dinner going. I am just about ready to add the potatoes and carrots since I'll be using our canned potatoes and carrots in it.

  1. For a minute I thought you were recommending spiced vanilla pears, spinach and yogurt TOGETHER, as a recipe suggestion, and I was thinking "Becky reckons I eat some pretty stange stuff, but that beats them all"!
I've been eating some of my pickled pears this evening - with some Wensleydale cheese!

  4. Oh I do like the sound of those pears - delicious, and like Mark I am very glad they weren't being pared with spinach - although I do think they'd be nice with yogurt.

  5. I think they will go great with the yogurt and that is probably how they will be used.

  11. The pears look great! But I'm jealous of the spinach. Our winter crop was ruined by leaf miners so we are missing our normal supply of winter spinach.
