So now you know. When I said, "These are all the seeds I will likely order this year."........it was a lie! No matter how hard I try, I can't help it. I'm a SEEDAHOLIC! I want to have a nice orderly garden where everything isn't shoved all in and crowded but I might not be able to resist the seeds. So here is what I got in this second order (there would have been a third order but Phil had the debit card at the time and I couldn't remember the number). I read about this company on some forum I was on and went to take a look and that is how I ended up with more seeds:
These seeds were ordered from Comstock, Ferre and Co.
Large Viroflay Spinach--is an heirloom spinach with large smooth leaves. I may plant this one this winter since the other spinach has done so well.
Delicious 51- is an heirloom melon. It is a 4-5 lb muskmelon and is supposed to be a heavy producer (yup, that is where they got me). No I don't know where I will put it as it isn't in the "plan" but I will figure out somewhere.
Early Yellow Bush Scallop- I have only grown a scallop squash one time and it only produced 2 squash and I absolutely loved it. Hopefully these will produce a few more than 2 this year. It is a very old heirloom that can be eaten as summer squash or kept till maturity to use in pies. Native Americans dried it and used it as gourd rattles.
Jimmy Nardello-- is a sweet, long, thin frying pepper. I have been looking for these for years and hope they do better than other sweet peppers have done in my garden. It is also a very old heirloom.
Tendersweet carrots--I really can't say that I bought these for any other reason than because the seed company had a $5 minimum order and I had only spent $4.75. But I had to have carrot seeds anyway so I got these. Maybe they will do well in the deep bed.
Now...if I can just find that ...other seed company...
I have the same disease! Maybe we need to start having meetings! My name is Lynda and I'm a seedaholic! I have enough seed to feed a third world country and I keep buying more! I love them! I'm going to start planting squash and melons in the flowerbeds next to the roses and other landscape plants...I figure, what the heck the beds have enough room and it might work out just fine.
ReplyDeleteI have not yet fully recovered from last years garden. I need to rest a bit more before I dig in to the seed catalogs. But - guess what I got from Santa? Herb seeds : )
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see that this company now belongs to Baker Seed...boy that Jere Gettle gets around!
ReplyDeleteYup it is but these are the actual "heirloom seed" selections, before they started adding all the seeds from other countries that might or might not be heirlooms (I asked them one time how they could know that these new seeds were heirlooms and they said they couldn't without a lot of testing. I still wonder why they added them if they weren't sure they were heirlooms. I always thought their catalog was spectacular without them).
ReplyDeleteYep me too! I've recently posted a list of all the seeds I have in stock at the moment and it's getting out of hand!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about it - ALL serious gardeners have this affliction! I always have many more seeds than I can reasonably use in my small garden.
ReplyDeleteAfter a while you learn which seeds keep for a long time and which you have to replace each year. Parsnip seeds for instance have a very short shelf-life, but lettuce seeds seem to remain viable for years.
I have seeds here everywhere. Technically, I probably don't need to 'buy' any but I bet I still get more.
ReplyDeleteI have thought for years that we need to start a 12 step program for gardeners. But then... I don't WANT to give up my addiction!!
ReplyDeleteJudy
Yup, and the first step is that you have to really want it and I don't either!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to avoid have a lot of extra seeds but as you know, it's difficult!
