And this is the Gold Laced Polish chick that hatched this morning. "I'm not UGLY! I'm not UGLY!"
I'll take his picture again when he is all fluffed out.
Brooders are all clean this morning and one large Easter Egger chick moved outside (because he kept stomping on this one). Fed everyone in the rain this morning but can't complain since we need the rain so badly. Planted some more cabbage and broccoli this weekend and I am sure the rain will help them settle in well.
OK, so who teaches the ducklings to swim when there is no Mummy Duck around? Presumably it's instinctive?
ReplyDeleteSo precious! Who needs a rubber ducky when you can have the real thing, eh? :)
ReplyDeleteAwww cute. This made me smile (and I haven't even had coffee yet!).
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to teach them, they know how. The only thing you need to watch out for when they don't have a mommy is that they don't get too chilled. Without the mother they do not have the oil in their feathers to start off with. There is a gland just before the tail that produces oil but the babies take some time to get oil. I can only let them stay in the water 10-15 minutes, then dry them off good and put them back under their light. I do believe it is important to give them these baths though, the brooder gets messy and ducks like to be clean. They always look so much better afterwards.
ReplyDeleteAwwwww, that is just precious! And that last little critter might just be so darn ugly as to be just adorable!
ReplyDeleteIt will be much cuter when it is all fluffed out.
ReplyDeleteAawwwww!
