A Dog House for Black Friday

Don't think I didn't get to go shopping today--because I did. But I don't get into the mad Black Friday mania every year. I'm not camping out a week ahead of time just to get a good deal. After all, Wal-mart made things so much easier for us by opening on Thanksgiving this year. Those people who felt the need to go crazy to get the deals went on Thanksgiving and those of us who (knew better) felt the need to stay home and have family time, went today and picked up a few good deals OR we shopped for good deals on Amazon. I got several myself. One of the good deals that I picked up at Wal-mart was a large flat dog bed. You see as it got colder and colder here and I realized how old Dukey now is and realized how inadequate that old rotting dog house had become. I had only broached the subject to Phil of picking up some wood for it yesterday. Finding the nice big dog bed just meant more reason to stop for that wood. I am not sure that this is what Phil wanted to do on his day off (he goes back to work tomorrow) but he understood the necessity for it as well. It didn't take him very long though we didn't have quite enough wood but Phil filled in with some of the pallet wood.
The first side.
Two sides.
The back almost done.
We didn't know what we were going to do for the front because we were out of wood. Luckily Phil found a perfect piece. I had put it on Dukey's old dog house when the roof started to rot.
Perfect. We set it on a pallet that had close slats.
He hardly let me get the bed in there before he was in it. I then added half that big gray fleece blanket that I had been saving to line the curtains with (this seemed like a better cause) and I put a piece of fleece of the door opening as well.
He hasn't left his house, not one time today. He is one happy new homeowner.

    1. My dog refuses to come inside and he is on a chain to protect the neighbors children who he would love to eat. If you had ever seen him running after a small boy with all the hair up on his back, you would understand better.

    2. I also want to mention that now that we have the back yard fenced we have let him in there several times to enjoy being chain free for a while but since he is large enough to jump it, we have to be very careful.

    3. Becky, don't feel a need to even respond to people like Ian James. He's probably never seen a dog on a chain, a baby in a playpen, a child ride a bike without a helmet and pads, a kid climb a tree without a cable, someone eat a food item with a "sell by date" of yesterday, whatever...I say snarky troll, but that's just me!! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and I did a little Black Friday shopping myself, picked up some dog food, a new goat mineral block and a 20% off flannel shirt at Tractor Supply, plus hubby got some new Schmidt jeans. Oh and a few things at Lowe's, but no malls or busy places for me!! By the way, you must be getting some traffic to have your own trolls!

    4. I am getting way more page views that usual for some reason. I don't mind if they have their opinions but I agree, I think it is a bit snarky to always think you know so much better than everyone else how things should be done.
I thank you for your response :)

    5. Just another little note about this. Dukey's chain is connected to a very long steel cable "run". He has plenty of room to move around. When I was a kid we had a belgium shepherd who used to have to have a logging chain and he still would break the chain from time to time. Dukey will break his chain now and then too but these days usually sticks around instead of going to eat the neighbors cats like he used to.

    6. My brother always kept his bulldog on a run unless he was there with him. It was for everyone's protection. The dog was well taken care of, happy, lived a long life. We sometimes suspected my brother loved that dog more than the rest of us, LOL! There's nothing inhumane about a dog on a chain/run as long as it's well cared for, as Dukey obviously is. Glad your blog is doing so well, I really enjoy it!

  2. My dogs never had a dog house. I did have a playhouse for the kids in the backyard. Either of the dogs could use it, but I found if I was gone they would just hide under the porch and stairs until I got back.

    1. Dukey used to go under the shed and never use his dog house but these last few years he has used it.

  3. Gee, I'm really glad you posted this. I thought I was the only one who used the hood of a car for a work bench! :-)
Now, the look on the dogs face I think he's saying, "Where's the heat pump"?

  4. Well, that dog-house is a lot more ambitious than my insect hotel! Maybe it could have some solar-powered heat panels now?

    1. When I can afford solar panels for the house, he can get solar panels for the doghouse too, lol.

    1. He absolutely loves it. Barely came out of it today either.

  7. Glad to see someone who loves their dog. There's too many left on a chain with no human interaction and little, if any, comforts. I rely on my small house dog to set up a ruckus, wake me up, and allow me the joy of blowing away any intruder. For that, he's invaluable.

  8. I don't see anything wrong with chaining your dog, only people trying to ban it. It's your business what you do with your dog, not the government's, and honestly, more people get bitten by dogs running loose then dogs that are chained. Awesome doghouse, I'll be building one similar, pitched roof though, or my dog will use it to jump my fence.
