The pepper plant in the picture above are not doing too bad but my tomato plants were terribly leggy. I had added the fluorescent light but it wasn't helping much. Plus I had a bunch seeds that I still needed to get started and no room on the windowsill. My greenhouse still has no roof but I thought I might still be able to use it- sort of. I took the fluorescent light out to the greenhouse, propped it across some blocks on the bench, then ran plastic across and upper shelf to the lower bench to make a mini greenhouse underneath. I moved all the tomatoes out there under the light except the Golden Nugget ones (which wouldn't fit) and one basil plant went out as well. I am fairly sure that the heat let off by the light will keep it warm enough (I hope so anyway.).
This left a bit more room in front of the window so I got the herbs started; sage, oregano, Giant parsley, more basil and thyme and I got my Pepino melons started as well.
Since I am showing the peppers in the picture I do want to mention that the Jimmy Nardello had a wonderful germination rate without me having to add any heat this year and I got just two Cubanelle but those seeds were last years old seeds which didn't germinate very well for me even last year. Almost all of the tomato plants came up which means I will likely have too many but I will plant them somewhere. Maybe I will get them planted out where the washer runs off this year as I had planned to last year.
Anyway, hopefully my seedlings will still grow in the greenhouse and I will have plenty of plants started this year so I won't be having to buy any.
Oh wow - look at your plants go! They look like they are going to be very hardy!
ReplyDeleteI just started my seeds last Sunday and I had some little sprouters this morning (I posted a few photos) on the Golden Acre Cabbage only. How long do you leave your fluorescent light on? I plan on starting my herbs next weekend.
Love your blog!
I was going to start my Chilli and Toms off today but it's far too chilly to do anything. So I'm having a bit of a lazy day instead.
ReplyDeleteYour pepper plants look great!
Martin
I'm resisting the (strong) temptation to sow chilli and tomato seeds. Our weather is just not suitable yet. I know that if I'm patient the plants will be better in the long run. Oh, for a fully lighted and heated greenhouse, eh?
ReplyDeleteI did sow some cress though - in a little tub on a windowsill. It'll be ready in about 4 days from sowing, so I can justifiably claim that I'm eating home-grown salad in February!
I'm with Mark - still putting off starting - it's just too soon...
ReplyDeleteWith the way our weather has been I probably could have put them out in the garden and just covered them for the few frosts we have had, lol. They likely would have just stalled out there though. I figure by the end of Feb to mid March, these can go outside.
ReplyDeleteI am still working on the greenhouse. It used to be great for starting plants in, just not so great after it got hot here. I hope to have it in better shape soon.
I love reading this kind of post...from here to harvest is like watching a mystery unfold!
ReplyDeleteYour getting ready for your spring and Im winding down. I hope your coming harvest is bountiful.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to do things are the same stage of winter as we do - its just our winters are 6 months apart. Very nice seedlings you have there.
ReplyDeleteStill not time to start any summer veggies here, so I am jealous. They look great!
ReplyDeleteGosh! All my seeds are still snuggled in their packets whislt I toast my toes by the fire. I've decided not to do any early sowings this year, but rather take it slowly :)
ReplyDeleteI actually waited longer than I usually do this year. Normally I start the tomatoes and peppers the first week of January but I didn't get it done this year with us looking for a truck and me being at work all the time.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking about getting a few pepper plants going. Your a bad influence....lol
ReplyDeleteI started my Chinese celery and took a chance on a cell pack of mesclum but must wait to start anything else. Hope your tomatoes are doing well.
