More wine and other things

It's been a rather dull week. Work, work and more work. Phil says I would miss work if I was home again but I am not so sure of that. Either way, I still have to work so it doesn't matter. I did get my stepping stones moved out back and place approximately where I want them but I haven't gotten any of them actually put in the ground yet. I moved the pots too. The larger ones I put on either side of the swing in the front yard and the smaller ones I put in the back yard but I believe they will have to be moved as I can't plant anything in them with the ducks out there. I have not moved the statue yet since it is just so darn heavy. I'm not sure where I want to put it yet but maybe in the front flower garden if I can get find a place where the 4 o'clocks won't completely overtake it.
I sent for some small container tomato seeds called Sweet N Neat. Here they are in a borrowed photo.

They are only supposed to get 10-12 inches high. I have planted them in 6 inch pots on the windowsill. I planted 4 pots of them and then immediately dumped one off the shelf in the windows and I haven't gotten it replanted yet.
The plants and seedlings in the garden are growing well but we haven't had any rain in a few weeks and it is very dry. I have watered twice but we all know that water from the tap just isn't the same as rain water. It is likely we will get a bit of rain from the storm though I would rather do without rain from a hurricane that might cause damage to so many other people's homes.
I did get the apple wine racked and into its jug a few days ago. I did not taste it at that time but it smells quite nice and I think it may turn out to be one of those that I will like.
Tonight I have started a larger batch of the pink lemonade wine. It has been my favorite so far and since I know now that I like it, there is no reason to make just one gallon. My bucket, however, is only 5 gallons so I will be making 3 gallons of pink lemonade wine. I was also not able to get the Old Orchard pink lemonade that I got last time. There wasn't any. So I had to get the cheaper Great Value cans. We'll just have to wait and see if there is any difference.
So that is all that has been going on here and I really don't have any plans for tomorrow yet. There are a few potatoes to can and those stepping stones need to be set in but I'm not really sure what I'll actually be doing.

  1. I looked all over his website, but I didn't find pink lemonade wine. Could you please post it?

    1. It is on his blog. I don't know why he doesn't put the recipes from his blog on his main site. The problem with his blog is that it doesn't do separate postings so you can't link to a specific recipe and it also does not give you links by months so you just have to go there and keep scrolling. The pink lemonade recipe is under the July 19,2012 posting on the blog. (There is a link to the blog on his site).

  2. I've been fairly busy today canning some potatoes too. You got me started back on that. I had a big sack here and then the store had 20 pound for $2.99 so I bought another sack. So I figured I better do something. I canned 7 quarts and then I'm going to make some french fries for the freezer. I have a bunch of huge sweet potatoes to do too. Dean really likes the sweet potato fries too.
Then I picked some more Italian green beans. I cooked some for supper and they were SO GOOD! I had cooked some last week and don't think I cooked them quite enough because they were a little tough. Not tonight. I have enough for about 6 pints to can but I probably will go check tomorrow and see if I missed any. We are supposed to have frost tomorrow night so I will lose them unless I cover them. Dean said he will cover them so we will see.
Then we went next door to steal some pallets. LOL It's not really next door, one house and a street between us. It's a furniture store out here in the country and they leave their pallets out by the warehouse and people pick them up. So there were several out there so we went an loaded them up. Warehouse doors were wide open, we could have loaded some furniture too. Dean went inside but saw nobody so we loaded the pallets and left. I told him I was tired of looking at them back there. I can see the warehouse doors when I come out of the house. So now I see them in my own yard. LOL He cuts them up for kindling for the wood stove. And I am saving a couple for the future chicken coop. Dean says by next spring we will be ready for them. I hope so. He has to have more surgery on that knee after Thanksgiving so we're trying to get some things done before that. Opps. I've written another book.

    1. Wow, that was a good deal on potatoes! I only got 8 lbs for that price :( I have not made fries to put in my freezer from my fresh potatoes yet (no freezer space, sigh). Good for you on the pallets. Most of them go to waste and you might as well use them.
Sorry to hear Dean has to have more surgery on that knee since you have to go through the recovery all over again, lol.

  3. Dull times are what makes the special days special! I've been doing a bit of Hard Labour too - making up that Raised Bed kit (you saw the pic on FB). It's done now, so I have the task of filling it next.

  4. Those are cute tomatoes. I remember years ago growing a long row of tiny tomatoes on the window sill over the winter. I don't remember getting a lot of tomatoes but it was a fun winter project.

    1. Yeah, I don't expect to get very many but the space is empty and I thought I would try it. I have lettuce and onions in the hanging baskets on the porch right now, another experiment. Those will probably have to go in the greenhouse eventually. If I bring them out on our warm winter days, they might do better.

  5. Hi Becky! Your life is definitely not dull! I think it's quite intriguing, especially the wine making! I think I have enough white potatoes canned, so I'm going to use my jars for canning the sweet potatoes I got in the Amish country. That will be a new experience for me. I think I'll can them the same way I did the white potatoes. Thanks for sharing! Blessings from Bama!
