Snake and Roasters

Here is the snake that I found in the pen this morning. He had killed 7 of my chickens in all-5 chicks and two adults. Called Phil to find out what he had done with the loppers (brush cutters) the last time we killed a snake but he didn't know so I moved snake cage and all out in the yard where I had more room (yes, it was scary) and he made a run for it through the bars and I had a shovel waiting for his neck. Took several tries but I finally got him. I haven't stretched him out yet but he is 5 or 6 ft. I'm sure.
I took care of him before I butchered chickens this morning. I only got the two oldest meat chickens butchered because for some reason my phone was ringing off the hook this morning. I left them as roasters since they were such nice meaty birds.

  7. I don't know what they are really called. Everyone down here calls them chicken snakes--for obvious reasons, I guess.

  8. We have killed 3 this year and lost three chickens. I'm glad you got 'em. Nice roaster! I hope to be eating mine soon. How old is the bird that you butchered?

  9. Becky, I don't have chickens, but it is snake haven here on my property in S. florida. This spring up til now, I'd say we have killed at least 10 or 12. I HATE anykind of snake, but if I had chickens and one ate so many, I would be MAD!!

  11. Just looking at your snake photo gave me goosebumps....I can't handle snakes. You're a real trooper for killing this one yourself. I would have run screaming for the hills!

  13. My Mother used to tell stories about when she was a girl growing up on the farm,(there were 11 of them 8 girls and 3 boys) and my Grandpa used to hand milk about 50 cows. Mom said it was NOT unusal to walk into the barn in the morning and maybe 5-10 cows would have milk snakes wrapped around their leg, sucking milk from the udder! I think I could handle that far better than seeing a snake that had just had a "gourmet meal" of my chickens. I would of likely the first time, tried killing the sucker with my bare hands! Guess they have passed the "word" around that yer place is good eatin', Becky?
