Afraid I haven't done a whole lot that is self sufficient this week. We have changed to the summer work hours and I always have a hard time adjusting (I would so much rather have my mornings off). Plus it is just incredibly hot here lately. Yesterday it was 99 degrees, today our high was supposed to be 97 and tomorrow we are cooling down to 94. Not to mention that this is Georgia-- it's humid and the pollen is terrible. I am also still coughing and sneezing and once it gets started it is hard to stop.
Anyway, in the gardening news. Something is still trying to eat all the plants despite the Sevens dust. It just goes after the ones that I miss. It seems to not like the peas (which are dying in the heat) or the squash though the peppers, beans, tomatoes and cucumbers are fair game.
The plums on the plum tree ripened but it is not producing real well this year. I believe I will give it a good pruning this fall and get some compost put in around the base and maybe some fertilizer.
No amount of heat stops the ducks, quail and bantams from laying. I have more eggs than I can possibly use and have left the ducks a nest and fed a bunch of eggs to the dog as well.
This weekend will be a 3 day weekend and I am really hoping to get some more things done.
yay! FUZZY BUTTS!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm on my way to howell to pick up some day old A&M's.
My incubator fried my set this week. stupid weather.....
Mmmmm duck egg pasta!
Those tiny quail chicks are so cute! Do you raise them for eating or not?
ReplyDeleteCan't seem to comment on the blogs anymore...testing...testing.
ReplyDeleteHumm, seems to work on firefox but not internet explorer. I really hate that.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Coley I need to learn how to make pasta now that I have a new pasta machine.
Mark, some of these will be for eating but I will keep some females and any of the larger males.
Quite a brood! That's pretty exciting! We need a warm up here, but not sure I want 90's!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the hatch... they are so tiny & cute.
ReplyDeleteWhen I make pasta dough, I beat the duck egg first. If I need more liquid, I add a little water the bowl I beat the egg. It grabs some of the leftover eggy bits!
ReplyDeleteI usually make the dough in my food processor.
I picked up those 6 A&M's last night. The guy we bought them from had a great setup! His wife is starting to get into rabbits too!
I never use my food processor unless I absolutely have to and even then I try to find another way to do it. I hate all the noise it makes.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about A&M's is that most people think they have A&M's and end up only having English whites or a mix of the two. True A&M's are supposed to be quite a bit larger, with whiter meat and they are quite hard to find.
Oh we ended up with 11 baby quail so far but I had to help the last two so we will see how it goes. One baby did die in the shell and I probably should have helped that one out. Sometimes the helped ones do not do as well but to me it is better to try than not to.
ReplyDeletefeeding organic eggs to the dog? you are RICH! ;) sorry to hear about the sneezing and HIGH temps. we're getting a lot of rain here in KY but even tho' it's been up to ninety, the cloud cover and new insulation are keeping the house relatively cool. haven't even turned on the air conditioner yet. May have to though, to help get some of this moisture out of the house!
ReplyDeleteCan't say that they are organic since I feed them feed from the feed store and I doubt it is organic. There isn't exactly a big market for organic or fresh eggs here. Too many people have chickens or will go with the cheaper eggs from the store. If I sell any eggs, I sell them online as hatching eggs.
ReplyDeleteI have read you Colony I and II posts do you plan on having a III?
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute! How do you get over the cuteness factor when it is time to eat them?
ReplyDeleteLynda, yes we do, we have just gotten a little slow on finishing up part II.
ReplyDeleteDonna, they aren't real cute when they are bigger so it isn't so bad.
