Smoked Pork Roast

Really not much going on this weekend. I mostly relaxed and practiced violin. I also practiced a bit on a new instrument that I bought the Irish tin whistle.
Through the day Phil and I smoked a nice big pork roast in the smoker. I used the cherry wood chips that I had bought. They weren't as sweet smelling as the plum wood is but it was still excellent.

Late this afternoon Michelle looked out the window. We have been looking out at the bird feeders in the back yard a lot lately because a flock of pine warblers has found the feeders and they are usually loaded with birds. Anyway, she asked me, "Is that a vulture standing over that duck?" I knew it couldn't be a vulture and I was right (as I ran to the back door). It was a hawk and he had killed the duck. Phil came out and shot at it with the pellet gun but never hit it and didn't scare it off far. It hung around up in the trees for quite a while.  I had to go put the ducks back in their pen (they had all run in there anyway, I just had to shut the door and fill their water pan in there) and will have to leave them there until I am sure they will be ok in the back yard again. Rather depressing but hawks have to live too and they are beautiful birds (though I can't say that I was appreciating this ones beauty while I was screaming at it).

  1. A story about the Food Chain; you're eating a pig while the hawk is eating a duck. Each of these is a fulfilling a need.

    1. Phil actually brought out a fife that he had. Says he wants to learn that one but I may beat him to it.

  3. Wise of you to appreciate that the hawk has to eat to. We just wish it wasn't our ducks and chickens, though! The pork roast looks great!

  4. We used to have a hawk living near us at our last house. One year I'd occasionally find feathers strewn around my garden. I didn't keep birds though. It was wild birds getting killed. Sorry to hear that the hawk got your duck though. Nature loves to intrude on our plans.

  5. We have a neighborhood hawk. Scared the heck out of the Accountant one day when it swooped down and landed in the arbor just feet away. Sorry you lost a duck. The roast looks wonderful! Did you brine it at all or did you go low and slow!

    1. I did not brine it. We just put it in the smoker on 250 and let it go until it was done.

  6. we see a lot of hawks here in n.e.mississippi......and alot of vultures too...funny things though-when a hawk is sighted and making a killing or meal for himself he is usually very much by him/herself..but i have yet to see a lonely vulture-seems the vultures like to scavenge as a family.

  9. Just one of your lurkers here, but I just wanted to let you know that it is illegal to shoot a hawk even if it is killing your livestock. It is also illegal to shoot to ONLY scare it off too. You cannot even throw a show at it LOL. Just thought you should know :) LOVE your blog!!!
